A place for reflection, creativity, and the good life
“Whether two people or 200, community is knowing that others care about the same things you do.”
—
Maya Misikir
In a world increasingly fractured and hurried, EtiUwem Ecological Centre offers something quietly radical:
Space to think, create, rest, and belong.
EtiUwem is a rural ecological centre rooted in land, history, and community. It welcomes activists, creatives, writers, students, and thoughtful individuals seeking time alone—or alongside others—on the shared journey toward wholesomeness.
Who we are
EtiUwem Ecological Centre is a gathering place for people from diverse backgrounds who are committed to deeper living and collective care.
Here, community is not defined by size, but by intention. Whether you arrive to work in solitude, collaborate with others, or simply pause and reflect, EtiUwem holds space for meaningful presence in a broken world.
We host retreats, residencies, meetings, and wisdom gatherings—while remaining equally open to those who simply need rest.
A place rooted in land and memory
EtiUwem sits on the brow of a lush hill in Ikot Nseyen, overlooking a valley of streams, swamp, and forest life.
This land lies along the historic migration route of the Ikot Nseyen people, whose ancestors journeyed from Ndon Uwem—literally “the land of good life”—in search of a place to settle. According to Ikot Nseyen 1700–2050 by Col. Stanley Adolf Bassey (Rtd), Ndon Uwem was the final stop in that journey.
The village itself is named after Nseyen, a powerful woman and founder of the community. From this lineage comes the name EtiUwem—the good life, good living.
This is not just a centre built on land.
It is a centre shaped by story.
